This small blue ceramic vase was thrown on the wheel. The total height is just under four inches. The width is just over three inches wide. The opening at the top is just over an inch wide.
It is glazed in a baby blue transparent glaze that when fired results in a thick glossy finish. Two areas on the outside are left bare to reveal the texture and color of the iron in the clay. The interior is fully glazed and watertight.
This is a fun vase for small table arrangements. The opening at the neck is just over an inch wide, making it perfect for bold arrangements that still need to include a few thick stems. I love putting pampas grass, bunny tails, or eucalyptus in this form. Wild bouquets contrast nicely with the angular order this form presents.
The color and luminosity of this glaze is really difficult to capture in a photo. If you look very closely you can still see freckling of the iron from the clay body beneath. Stoneware reduction firings cause the iron to migrate out of the clay to seek oxygen during the firing. This glaze maintains a fairly consistent light and icy blue appearance in both natural and artificial light.
Foliage not included. Dimensions are approximate.
